5 Reasons to Go Natural

Posted by Alicia Johnson on

Wearing your hair natural may seem like a daunting task. In order to make the decision to stop relaxing your hair, you have to think about all the factors that come along with it. Obstacles such as finding the right hair products for your hair type, and figuring out how to style your hair can make the transition seem impossible. However, I am here to tell you that you can do it! There are so many physical, psychological, and economic advantages to going natural. My reasons to go natural have helped me stay on track with my own natural hair journey, and I hope they will inspire you to begin a hair journey of your own. Of course, using relaxers is fine, and you should do whatever you are comfortable with. But if you’re looking for inspiration to get started, you’ve come to the right place! Without further ado, here are five reasons to go natural.

Reason #1: Maintaining natural hair is cheap!

Having natural hair has been the most cost-effective decision I have ever made. You don’t need to have an entire closet full of natural hair products. A small arsenal of good products and tools (such as a wide-tooth comb, sulfate-free shampoo, leave-in conditioner, etc.) is all you need to maintain healthy natural hair. Although there are many luxury natural hair brands, you can find cheaper products that are just as good at your local drugstore.

Reason #2: You can connect with other naturals.

Having natural hair is like having a VIP pass to a world of beautiful sisters! Exchanging a polite smile, or even receiving a gratuitous compliment from a fellow Naturalista is the most uplifting part about having natural hair. You can uplift other women that share the same lifestyle as you, and it makes you feel great in return.

Reason #3: You stand out from the crowd.

Although natural hair is a huge trend at the moment, Naturalistas are a bit of a minority. Yet, being one of the few people rocking a ‘fro can be extremely uplifting. People will be in awe of your unique hair texture, which helps you meet new people. You will stand out in any social situation, and people won’t be able to take their eyes off of you. Just make sure to politely decline when people ask to touch it!

Reason #4: You don’t have to worry about your hair as much.

Getting caught in the rain isn’t nearly as terrifying, anymore! In fact, the more moisture your hair gets, the better. Instead of being afraid of going near large bodies of water, or doing anything that may ruin your hair, you can simply relax and take pleasure in the fact that your hair was meant to withstand the elements!

Reason #5: Natural hair is more versatile.

There is a common misconception that you have to leave your natural hair completely untouched. On the other hand, natural hair is a lot easier to experiment with! Dying your natural hair is a lot easier and safer than dying chemically straightened hair. The dye color also lasts longer with natural hair. Along with that, you can still straighten your hair. As long as you use proper heat protection and choose a low heat setting on your hot tools, heat damage should be very minimal. With relaxers, you have to commit to having straight hair. If you go natural, you have more options.

I hope this inspires you to begin the process of going natural. Although there may be obstacles that you think you can’t move pass, I am here to tell you that you can do whatever you set your mind to. Regardless, remain true to yourself, and stay beautiful!

xoxo Alicia
